Chapter IX from The Jungle

Upton Sinclair
This guy (Upton Sinclair) wrote The Jungle. It was a book that exposed the meat packing plants, which turned out to be a pretty disgusting place. The whole chapter didn't only talk about the meat packing plant, but that's the part that freaked me out the most. He uses really good imagery and I kinda wish he hadn't ha. It was really good writing though; I couldn't believe how disgusting everything was. Everything was so dangerous from the diseased meat to the diseased workers. The worst thing is if anyone fell into these vats full of chemicals, they'd end up dying and their bodies would be mixed with the product and sent out to the world as "Durham's Pure Leaf Lard" I can't believe how bad things were back then. Even the inspectors were paid off to pass the plant for inspection. I think Upton Sinclair did good by exposing the harsh conditions of meat packing plants. They were really dangerous and disgusting.

  1. About how disgusting all the meat was processed really grossed me out too. It’s crazy that people were doing this and it is even crazier that they were allowed to get away with it for so long. I imagined if that were to happen now and the public found out there was some extra human in their food, it would be such huge news and it would take so many people and companies down. Although it’s still gross to think about what we still have in our meat like bugs and whatnot, it’s still better than eating parts of other sick humans.

  2. I find it interesting that even today after everything we see through the many media outlets available to us, Sinclair is able to provide us with such vivid imagery through his writting that it makes people's stomachs turn. We know now that work conditions and food we eat have improved significantly due to books such as Sinclair's The Jungle. During his time, he is able to capture his audience and ultimately make them see that new stricter regulations were needed at the meat packing plants. He definitely took investigative journalism to a new level with his book and I'm sure we're all thankful for it.

  3. I find it amazing how Sinclair was able to get a whole nation behind him with his writings. Even more was the fact that he was able to get the Government to create the FDA just by writing about the meat packing company. I like how Sinclair was also able to bring realism to the Jungle by making you relate to some characters and how people were just trying to get by just to put food on the table for their familes. Even though the way some of the people tried to make money was probably not the best deicision making and pretty shady.
